Bundoran GAA News

Bundoran Match Reports now available in reports section

June 29th 2008
The Bundoran senior team got back on the winning trail after two heavy defeats in their previous two league games. They beat Urris by 3-14 to 0-9 with ten different players getting on the score-sheet. Next up is Sean MacCumhaills in the championship. The Reserves also won but had to endure a spirited comeback from Urris – leading by 3-8 to 0-1 at half-time they only had five points to spare at the final whistle on a 3-12 to 4-4 scoreline.

At underage level , despite some quite heavy showers a successful under-8 blitz was run in Gaelic park on Saturday morning. Many thanks to all the parents who helped out, to Pat Walsh who prepared the field and to Pat, Barry Keaney and Paul McGrath for referee-ing. The under-14s lost at home to table-toppers Ardara in Gaelic Park last Friday on a 1-6 to 3-11 score-line and their next game is away to Kilcar on Wednesday July 2nd and at home to Four Masters the following Wednesday. The under-16s play Four Masters in their Donegal Adventure Centre semi-final on Friday July 4th and the minors are out in the Britton All-Sports Regional League Final against Dungloe on Wednesday July 7th. The Under-10s travel to Pettigo for a four team blitz that will also involve Naomh Brid and Aodh Ruadh on Saturday July 4th. The bus will leave St Macartan’s National School at 10.30.

June 23rd 2008
Congratulations to Trevor McGlone, Lawrence Goan and the under-16s who won the County Division 1 under-16 title last Friday evening in Convoy. In a gritty display Bundoran recovered from the concession of 1-1 in the first minute to record a 1-13 to 2-5 victory against Milford who, along with St Eunans, were their bogey team at this level over the last five years. Two points behind 2-2 to 0-6 at the break, a Brandon Goodwin goal early in the second half gave Bundoran a lead they were never to relinquish.

Elsewhere it was a less encouraging week as the Seniors fielded a weakened side for the second week in succession and suffered a crushing home defeat at the hands of Naomh Mhuire. The Reserves, on the other hand, had a comfortable 2-14 to 0-11 victory. The u-14s also lost at home to Killybegs. This coming week sees the u-21s start their championship campaign against Moville in Gaelic Park, while the u-14s have games scheduled against Ardara (at home) tonight Thursday and Kilcar, away, next Wednesday. The Seniors and Reserves are due to play Urris in Gaelic Park in Gaelic Park this Sunday.

The News and Views town league reached its finale on Saturday in Gaelic Park with James Cassidy-managed Munster coming from behind to defeat Gerry Oates-managed Connacht in a thrilling game. Leinster defeated Connacht in the third place play-off. This coming Saturday an u-8 blitz will be held in Gaelic Park.
A note has already been sent home to parents askingthem to please help with this annual event. Finally, there are still places left in the VHI GAA Cul Camp.
Forms available from John McEniff or Teresa in the school.

Celebrations Bundoran Under 16

June 9th 2008
The senior team put in a rousing second half performance to come from behind to comfortably beat Downings in their preliminary Intermediate championship tie on Saturday evening. They now advance to meet Sean MacCumhaills. Behind 4-3 after a lacklustre first half Bundoran out-scored their opponents by 12 points to 1 in the second half for a 15-5 victory. This Saturday it is back to league action with Reserve and Senior games against Na Rossa.

The u-14s season got off on the wrong foot when despite scoring five goals they lost by six points in Glenties last Wednesday on a 5-4 to 3-16 scoreline. This Friday, June 13th, they meet Dungloe in Gaelic Park and are scheduled to play their third game on Monday 16th when they travel the short distance to Ballyshannon to take on Aodh Ruadh. Both games are at 7.30.

The u-12s lost their Nirvana Restaurant regional championship final to Kilcar on a 4-14 to 3-8 score-line in Mountcharles on Monday evening. Behind by nine points midway through the second half they pulled back to within two but on the night Kilcar were much the better side and recovered their composure to run out comfortable and deserving winners. Next up will be Northern Champions Red Hughs in the County semi-final. The News and Views town league re-starts this Wednesday afternoon with the two remaining league games being played in Gaelic Park directly after school. The final is scheduled for Saturday June 21st.  The u-10s are out this Saturday in the Michael Shannon in Ballyshannon. Manager Noel Carr will be in touch with players through St Macartan’s National School during the week.

Bundoran sent two very young and eager teams to the u-8 blitz in Ardara last Saturday. Blessed with sunshine, a very enjoyable time was had by the youngsters, and their parents, at a well organised event. Powered by the goal-scoring Rachel McGee, the energetic Mason Collins, the stylish Mulhern cousins, the rugby style prowess of five year old Gerry Oates and the gymnastics of Rhona McEniff the B team done everyone proud. The A team also played really well with excellent performances from the three Oisins, Adam McGlone, Michael McGloin,  Matthew Duffy and a very effective Adam Gallagher.

June 2nd 2008
The Intermediate Championship play-off between Bundoran and Downings takes place on Saturday evening. Bundoran lost the first leg in Gaelic Park and then salvaged their championship hopes with a gritty win in Downings. The venue for the playoff has yet to be confirmed. Well done, and congratulations, to the u-16s who had a resounding victory over Cloughaneely to reach the County final last Friday in Dooey. Leading by 0-6 to 0-4 at the break they turned in a power-packed second half performance to end up 3-14 to 0-6 winners. Scorers for Bundoran were: Stephen Reilly 2-2, Brandon Goodwin 0-5, Neal Chapman 0-3, Adam Coyne 0-3, Brain Cassidy 1-0 and Diarmuid Spratt 0-1, while David Stuttard, Niall McGonigle, Lee Creevy and Sean McGloin also put in very good performances.

As expected a great night was had at the Bundoran Bord na nÓg social in Marlboro House last Tuesday night. Thanks to all who bought tickets, those who made generous donations, to the ticket sellers themselves, those who helped on the night, to the musicians who supplied the entertainment on the night and to Entertainments Officer, James Gallagher. Thanks also to those who supplied the spot prizes, namely Cara Pharmacy, Mack’s Amusements, Donegal Adventure Centre, Kelly’s Pharmacy, Phillip and Olivia Murphy, Olympic Amusements, Great Northern Hotel, Ocean View Beauty Salon, Bundoran GAA, Lee Gallagher, Bundoran Surf Co, Jean Murphy, Bundoran Cineplex, and Charlie O’Donnell. Finally thanks to Michael Mc Weeney and his staff for an excellent supper and top-class service and Mo’s very kind offer to help train the 2009 U-12 Bundoran Team. A great night was had by all!

A very successful and enjoyable blitz involving Bundoran and four visiting teams from St Nauls, Four Masters, Aodh Ruadh and Pettigo was held, for the most part in glorious sunshine, last Saturday. Bundoran won the A section, winning all four of their games, while Aodh Ruadh beat Bundoran and St Nauls to take the B title. Huge thanks to all the parents, well really to all the mothers, who kept a constant supply of delicious and nutritious food and drink to all players, spectators and mentors. Thanks also to the refs and to Pat Walsh and his team who had the pitch lined out and to Noel Carr for organising everything. The Under-10s next outing will be the Michael Shannon in Fr Tierney Park on June 14th. The under-8’s will be out this weekend when they travel to Ardara for a blitz and manager John McEniff will send notes around to the players through the school during the week.

The under-14s begin their campaign in the Brian McEniff Hotels u-14 league this coming Friday June 6th when they travel to Glenties to play Naomh Conall. The under-12s contest the Nirvana Restaurant Division 2 final on Monday when they play Kilcar at a venue yet to be confirmed. Finally, well done to Ryan Walsh who looked much the happiest of Bundoran’s five representatives in McCumhaill Park on Sunday where he ref’d the Cumann na mBunscoil half-time game - well done Ryan.

May 19th 2008
Tuesday May 27th is the highlight of the Bord na nÓg social calendar with the annual night in Marlboro house, starting at 9.00. Music will be supplied all night by the cream of the area’s musical talent and supper will be provided by Marlboro. Tickets priced €15.00 are currently being sold and can also be purchased at the door on the night. The Senior team are back in action this weekend after a rest last week. Their opponents will be Moville with throw-in at 7.30 in Gaelic Park. Their will, however, be no reserve game.

It was a good week for our underage footballers with the u-10 A side winning the blitz in Kilcar on Saturday and the B side runner’s up to the host club. Particularly good for the A side were Conor J McManus, Timmy Govorov, Kelvin Mulhern, Nathan Cassidy and Marek Kurms, while Alannah Ward, Orin McGann, Oisin Walsh, Casey O’Donnell and Matthew Duffy shone for the B side. There will be no town league this weekend because of the Willie Rogers tournament in Ballyshannon but the next under-10 blitz will be the following week – Saturday May 31st - and will be hosted by Bundoran. It is hoped to have an u-8 blitz hosted by Bundoran on June 28th.

Some of the same players faced each other again on Monday evening in Gaelic Park in a thriller of a game, a curtain-raiser for the regional final between these two teams that ended 4-8 to 3-11. A draw was probably a fair result in a game where the lead see-sawed widely throughout. Best for Bundoran were Jane Carty, David Hastings, Aidan Mitchell, Jamie Brennan, Shane Carr and Niall Cullen. Six of the under-12s had also been out on Sunday in the Community Games when they put it up to the St Eunans that eventually won the competition, leading for three-quarters of the game but conceding four goals in three minutes mid-way through the second half. Brian McHenry, James Steward and Paul Murphy were outstanding in defence while Cian McEniff and Niall Carr also played very well. The u-12s are out this weekend in the Willie Rogers competition in Ballyshannon.

The u-16s got a bye from Dungloe in their championship quarter-final but will be out this will be out this weekend in a Cross-Border tournament hosted by Bundoran in Gaelic Park and involving Dungannon Clarkes, Donaghmore and Erne Gaels. The minors won their way through to the Regional final when they defeated Naomh Naille in an exciting playoff last Wednesday. Down by five points at half-time they rallied ten minutes into the second half to pull away and win by 2-16 to 2-9. Best for Bundoran were Shane Moohan, Stephen Ryan, Matthew McCabe, Neal Chapman and Stephen Reilly. Their opponents in the Regional final will be Dungloe and because of the upcoming exams the match will not be played until end-June or possibly early July. The u-14s were scheduled to start their league campaign this weekend but this has been pushed out until the first week of June.

May 12th 2008
Last week was one of the better weeks for Bundoran GAA. The Senior team’s championship hopes remain alive after victory by the minimum margin in a game that was high on drama in Downings on Sunday. Down 5-3 at the break Bundoran hauled themselves back to lead by 0-8 to 0-6 as the game entered a marathon eight minutes added time. The play-off is scheduled for the weekend of June 7/8 and the seniors have no game this weekend. A very under-strength Reserve side, posting seven changes from their first leg, lost by 1-8 to 0-4. Match reports on all games – senior and underage - can be found on the Bundoran GAA website.

At underage level congratulations to our under-16 side who beat Aodh Ruadh by 1-11 to 1-3 in the Donegal Adventure Centre Division 1 league final last Wednesday. Unbeaten throughout their campaign it was just reward for the boys and their management team of Trevor McGlone and Lawrence Goan and hopefully they will be able to step up another gear to overcome Northern opposition in the county semi-final. To complete a hat-trick of success over the week the under-12s won a thrilling home tie against Naomh Naille to book a place in the Nirvana Restaurant under-12 Division 2 final.
With five under-10s playing the home side gave away a lot in height and weight advantage but as they say it’s the fight in the dog that matters and while the 4-8 to 3-3 score-line suggests a comfortable win it was anything but. Nauls led going into the final quarter and there was only two points in the difference when Bundoran scored their fourth goal with seven minutes remaining but they closed out the game in style with three unanswered points.

The week ahead brings more important ties with the minors in the Division 1 league play-off with Naomh Naille to decide who goes forward to the Regional final. After their defeat by Bundoran two weeks ago, Killybegs conceded the points to Nauls who then ended level with Bundoran at the top of the division, necessitating a play-off. Throw-in in this game is at 7.00 on Wednesday May 14th. The under-10s have a blitz in Kilcar on Saturday and the Community Games blitz in Dunfanaghy on Sunday. Manager Noel Carr will inform the panels of the bus times through the school. The under-12s are out in their final league tie against Kilcar on Monday May 19th but both teams are already through to the league final.

The annual Bord na nÓg social night in Marlboro House is next Tuesday week May 27th. As usual, supper will be provided and James Gallagher of Boxtie will organise a wealth of local music talent to entertain throughout the night and into the following morning. This well-established annual night is always the best of craic and Bord na nÓg officials will be selling tickets door to door over the next fortnight and you are asked to support this very good cause as it is the main fund-raising event for Bord na nÓg who organise underage football for between 150 and 200 kids under the age of 18. Anyone with queries can contact Diarmuid Doherty, Tess McCaughey, Joan McEniff, Edel Carlin-Rosanio or Olivia Murphy.

May 6th 2008
The Senior game against Na Rossa last weekend was cancelled but both Reserves and Seniors travel to Downings on Saturday afternoon for their second leg championship games against Downings. Having lost the home ties in Bundoran, both sides need to win to keep their championship hopes alive. Throw-in for the Reserves is 5.30 and 7.00 for the Seniors.

The minors showed character to beat a strong Killybegs side in their league tie on Friday with goals by Jonathan Ward helping them to a 2-5 to 0-6 victory. Killybegs subsequently conceded their final game to Naomh Naille and Bundoran now play Naomh Naille in a play-off for a place in the regional final against the winners of Section 2. A date for this play-off has not yet been fixed. The u-16s play their Donegal Adventure Centre regional final against Ballyshannon on Wednesday May 7th in Ballintra. The u-12s plaed Naomh Bríd on Tuesday evening in Bundoran and are out against Naomh Naille, also in Bundoran, next Monday at 7.00.

April 28th 2008
Sunday afternoon saw Bundoran lose home ties in their Intermediate Championship tussles with Downings and both the Seniors and Reserves have cause to regret opportunities missed. The Seniors profligacy in front of the posts and a poor first 15 minutes were the root cause of their downfall as the visitors scored four unanswered points in the opening quarter and while Bundoran completely dominated the second half they managed just two points while a dozen chances went a begging as they registered nine wides, hit the crossbar and dropped the ball into the goalkeeper’s hands on two occasions in a low-scoring 0-10 to 0-8 defeat. In the Reserve match, a dozy first 20 minutes that saw Downings score 2-5 before Bundoran registered a score and thereby put paid to the Reserves hopes although they rallied well in the second half but the a 2-7 to 0-2 deficit proved too much and they lost by 1-8 to 2-8. Next Sunday, Bundoran entertain Na Rossa in Gaelic Park with the Reserve tie at 1.30 and the Senior throw-in at 3.00.

A very depleted minor side lost their unbeaten record in Tir Connaill Park to Four Masters on Friday evening. Leading by 1-5 to 0-3 coming up to the break they fell apart, conceding 2-7 without reply over a a fifteen minute period spanning both sides of the interval. While Bundoran dominated the last quarter they never managed to close the gap to less than four points and Masters had the final say with two late points to leave it 2-13 to 1-10. Their final league tie is at home to Killybegs in Gaelic Park on Friday May 2nd. The u-12s bounced back from their defeat in Kilcar to win 8-8 to 4-8 in Glencolmcille in the Nirvana Restaurant Division 2 league. Their next game is at home to Naomh Bríd at 7.00 in Bundoran next Monday May 5th. The under-16s last game in the Donegal Adventure Centre Division 1 League on Monday evening against Naomh Naille saw them maintain their 100% record, albeit because their opponents did not field. Bundoran now qualify for the Regional Final at a date yet to be confirmed.

The second round of games in the News and Views Town League on a sunny Saturday morning saw two great games as Munster moved to the top of the table with a 5-1 to 4-1 victory over Connacht. Cian McEniff’s wind-assisted third goal midway through the second period left it 5-0 to 1-0 and a rout looked on the cards but Michael McGlone goaled almost immediately for Connacht and began a mini-revival that almost saw them close the gap completely. The preceeding tie was an even more exciting affair with Niall Carr’s Leinster hitting 3-6 but lost by a single point as the goal-scoring exploits of Kelvin Mulhern’s Ulster saw them score 5-1. With First Communions, Confirmations and a Southern Regional Board blitz over the coming three Saturdays it will probably be well into May before the third round of games are scheduled. The Community games u-10 County final has been set for Sunday May 18th and will take place in Dunfanaghy.

The official GAA Cúl Camp returns to Bundoran for the first week in August. Forms are available from Teresa in St Macartan’s NS or from John McEniff. The cost is €65 for the first child and €50 for each subsequent child and as usual this includes a full kit, bag and water bottle. Finally, good luck to Magh Ene College senior team who take on PCC Falcarragh in the Donegal VEC Division 1 final this Wednesday in Glenswilly at 12.00.

April 21st 2008
The Seniors had a very convincing win against Naomh Bríd on Sunday on the back of a very good second half. Turning over with a 3-1 interval lead, three quick points and a Christy Keaney goal set the Seasiders on the path to a 1-11 to 0-3. The Reserves had an even more convincing 2-16 to 2-2 victory with Sean McIntrye and Rhys Goodwin notching the goals and Mark Travers chipping in with ten points.

The Under-16s continued on their winning ways with a very comfortable victory over Dungloe at Gaelic Park on Monday evening. All of the team, apart from the goalie and full-back line got on the score sheet: Brian Cassidy (1-3), Stephen O’Reilly (1-2), Brandon Goodwin (1-2), Adam Coyne (1-2), Diarmuid Spratt (1-2), Gary Clancy (0-3), Neal Chapman (0-3), Lee Creevy (0-2), David Stuttard (0-2) and Niall McGonigle (0-2). On the same night the u-12s lost their unbeaten start going down on a 5-18 to 6-8 scoreline in Kilcar with the scores coming from Jamie Brennan (2-3), Jane Carty (2-1), Cian McEniff (1-3) and Niall Carr (1-1). The minors beat Naomh Naille on a 3-9 to 2-8 scoreline in Mountcharles with the scorers being Michael McEniff (1-5), Ashley Mulhern (1-1), Stephen Reilly (1-2), Matthew McCabe (1-0) and Shane Moohan (0-1).

Highlight of the upcoming fixtures is the First Leg of the Intermediate championship against Downings next Sunday in Gaelic Park with throw-in at 3.00 and the Reserve game commencing at 1.30.  The minors travel to Tirconnall Park on Wednesday evening to take on Four Masters and on Wednesday April 30th take on Killybegs in Gaelic Park in their final league game. The 16s final league game – against Naomh Naille in Mountcharles – is also next week on Monday. The 12s take on Naomh Columba in Glencolmcille on Friday evening.

The News and Views town league got off to a rip-roaring start in fine weather on Saturday morning in Gaelic Park with Cian McEniff’s Munster putting on a splendid second half performance to beat Kelvin Mulhern’s Munster, while in a closer game that went down to the last few scores, Paul Murphy’s Connacht overcame Niall Carr’s Leinster. Congratulations to first-time managers James Cassidy and Gerry Oates on guiding Munster and Connacht to victory. The second round of the town league will be this Saturday, again commencing at 10.00, when Munster play Connacht and Ulster take on Leinster.

April 14th 2008
The Seniors good start to the league came a cropper in Gaelic park on Sunday evening when they lost by five points to Sean McCumhaills. Having clawed their way back to level matters by the end of the third quarter, a brace of points and a freakish goal opened up a five point gap that the home side, feeling the absence of their county star Shane McGowan, never closed. Nevertheless McCumhaills had keeper Rory Patton to thank for two marvellous saves in the closing minutes that kept Bundoran at bay. Spoils were shared at 0-10 each in the reserve game. Next up this weekend is Naomh Bríd on Sunday with the Reserve game throw-in at 1.30 and the senior game starting at 3.00.

All around, Saturday was a not a good day for Bundoran’s footballers in Gaelic Park, the u-14s having crashed out of the Feile to Aodh Ruadh there earlier in the day. The u-12s and the u-16s unbeaten runs continued, however. A very small and young u-12 side travelled to Naomh Naille on Monday evening and two goals by Niall Carr and 3-4 by Jamie Brennan saw them beat the home side by 5-4 to 2-6 in their Nirvana Restaurant Division 2 game. On the same evening the u-16s travelled to Fintra where they comfortably beat Killybegs to guarantee themselves a place in the regional final. Next Monday the 16s end the league section of their campaign with a home tie against Dungloe, while on the same evening the 12s head to Kilcar to take on the only other unbeaten team in their league. After their break last week, the Bundoran minors play Naomh Naille in Mountcharles on Wednesday April 17th and the following Wednesday they play Killybegs in Gaelic Park.

The News and Views town league for boys and girls under-10, and including all in first, second and third classes, commences this Saturday in Gaelic Park. It is hope to start at 10.00 and all children are asked to be at the pitch by 9.45. This year’s captains are: Niall Carr, Paul Murphy, Cian McEniff and Kelvin Mulhern. The teams are: Munster – Cian McEniff, Brian McHenry, James Stewart, Conor Jack McManus, Tyler Beattie, Michael McGloin, Orin McGann, Jack Delaney, Casey O’Donnell, Aaron Keaney, Saul Gavigan, Dervla Carr and Owen Cassidy; Ulster – Kelvin Mulhern, Mareks Kurms, Conor Carty, Oran Gallagher, Oisin McMahon, Adam McGlone, Oisin Cassidy, Rachel McGee, Gerry Oates, Peadar McHenry, Shannon O’Reilly, Shane Carty and Adam Gallagher; Connacht – Paul Murphy, Timmy Govorov, Dylan Donagher, William H Brown, Megan McGee, Jarlath H Brown, Michael Goan, Matthew Cassidy, Dillon Mulhern, Kyle Nelson; Leinster – Niall Carr, Nathan Cassidy, Michael McCaughey, Cody Granaghan, Alannah Ward, Oisin McGloin, Aine Cullen, Diarmuid Ryan, Rhona McEniff, Matthew Duffy, Aoise McHenry, Daniel Mulhern and Ceallach Mitchell.

April 7th 2008
The u-14s begin their campaign in the local Feile blitz this Saturday in Gaelic Park, Bundoran with visiting teams from Aodh Ruadh, Four Masters and, possibly, Naomh Naille. Under-10 and u-8 training commenced in Gaelic Park this week and will continue every Wednesday directly after school at 3.00. Anyone with queries should contact either Noel Carr or John McEniff.

The u-12s won a very exciting game against Naomh Bríd in Ballintra last Friday evening in their Nirvana Restaurant Division 2 tie. Trailing by a goal with ten minutes to go they pulled four points clear following two goals from Jamie Brennan and a Cian McEniff point but the home side converted a penalty to leave the minimum between the sides for the final three minutes with Bundoran eventually prevailing on a 3-8 to 4-6 scoreline. The12s are away again this Friday when they travel to Mountcharles to take on Naomh Naille.

The minors opened their campaign in the Britton All-Sports Division 1 league with a comfortable win in Gaelic Park against an Aodh Ruadh side weakened by injuries. Goals from Rhys Goodwin and Michael McEniff set them en route to a 3-14 to 0-7 win. The next game is on Wednesday April 16th in Mountcharles with the throw-in scheduled for 7.00. Bundoran u-16s are now joint top, with Naomh Conall, of the Donegal Adventure Centre Division 1 league following a comfortable win against Ardara in Gaelic Park on Monday evening. Next Monday they travel to Fintra to take on Na Cealla Beaga before finishing the league stage of the competition with a home tie against Dungloe.

March 31st 2008
The Senior team’s game against Naomh Columba last Sunday was, along with all other games in the County, postponed because of the re-scheduling of Donegal’s league game against Tyrone. This Saturday Bundoran are again at home with Downings providing the opposition – Reserves start at 4.45 and the Seniors at 6.15. The u-16s drew with Naomh Columba in Glenties on Monday evening. Their next game is at home to Ardara at 6.30 in Gaelic Park on Monday April 7th.

Bundoran Bord na nÓg meet on Thursday evening April 3rd in the Holyrood Hotel at 8.30. All officials and managers of underage teams are please asked to attend. Training for u-8s restarted after the Easter break at Magh Ene College on Monday at 5.00. Going into April training for the u8s will move outdoors and take place at the same time as the u-10s. The News and Views Town League commences in the next few weeks and will involve all u-8 and u-10 boys and girls. There are still, a very few players, that have not registered and they should do so immediately now that league games of one form or another have commenced across all age groups. The u-10 training scheduled for tomorrow evening in Magh Ene College has had to be cancelled because it clashes with the u-12 game against Naomh Bríd in Ballintra at 6.00 and there are eight u-10s on the u-12 panel. The u-12s asked to gather at Gaelic Park for the bus to Ballintra at 5.15.

Easter has come and gone and already the dates have been set for the GAA Cúl Camps. As was the case in 2007, Bundoran will again host a GAA Summer Camp during the first week in August. There are no discounts for early bookers I am afraid but anyone who does want to get their children’s places booked can get forms off John McEniff or Teresa in St Macartan’s National School.

March 24th 2008
Bundoran seniors kicked off their league season on Easter Sunday with a well-deserved win in Moville. There were particularly impressive displays from Shane O’Donnell, Adam Dunmore (0-1), Dessie McNamara (0-2), Niall Dunne, Christy Keaney (0-4) and Tommy Hourihan (0-4). Fergal McKiernan and Richie Gillespie also pointed while Declan Rafferty showed great opportunism in scoring the goal that launched the Seasiders on the road to victory. There was no Reserve tie as Moville do not have a Reserve team. Bundoran’s next game will be home to Naomh Columba next Sunday with the Reserve game due to start at 13.30 and the Senior tie at 15.00. The club would like to wish the best of luck to Shane McGowan and the u-21 team he captains in the Ulster championship, while also sympathise with Shane, Barry and the wider McGowan and Shovlin families, particularly his mother Mary, on the death last week of Shane’s grandfather, John Shovlin, in Portnoo.

All round it was a good week for Bundoran football with both the under-16s and the under -12s also getting their campaigns off to winning starts. The u-16s opened their campaign with a sparkling performance to overcome Four Masters in Gaelic Park in the Donegal Adventure Centre Division 1 league, while the u-12s were too strong for Naomh Columba in their Nirvana Restaurant Division 2 tie. The u-16s were neck and neck with Four Masters for most of the first half but a flurry of scores saw them take a four point lead into the interval. The second half was a different story with goals from Adam Coyne, Lee Creevy and Stephen Reilly opening a gap that the visitors never looked like closing. The u-12 game took an opposite tack with a star performance from Jamie Brennan and a strong wind advantage saw Bundoran overwhelm Naomh Columba, who fought back in the second half but could not close the gap. The u-16s were out again on Monday evening when they defeated Aodh Ruadh by 3-12 to 2-6. Both the 16s and the 12s travel to Glenties in the next week for games against Naomh Conall with the 12s there on Friday 28th at 5.00 and the 16s on Monday 31st at 6.30. On Wednesday April  2nd, the minors open their campaign with a home tie against Naomh Conall at 7.00.

March 19th 2008
Sunday, March 23rd marks the start of the Division 2 League and Bundoran Senior team travel to Moville for a 3.00 throw-in.  The following Sunday, March 30th, Gaelic Park hosts Bundoran and Naomh Columba for the first home game of the new season. The first five fixtures can be found on www.BundoranGAA.com .

The underage season got underway last Sunday when the under-16s defeated Four Masters in Gaelic Park last Sunday afternoon. Goals by Stephen Reilly, Adam Coyne and Lee Creevy put a gloss on the scoreline but it was the point-scoring of Coyne and Gary Clancy that provided the platform for the second half-goals. The u-16s match against Naomh Naille, postponed from last week, has not yet been re-fixed and the team’s next outing is a home tie against neighbours Ballyshannon next Sunday at 12 noon. The u-12s have their first game of the season on Good Friday when they take on Naomh Columba in Gaelic Park at 5.00. Match reports can be found on the newly revamped Southern Minor Board – follow the links from www.Donegalgaa.ie

Community Games – Mar 17 2008

Bundoran has got off to a flying start in the County Community Games competitions. Silver and bronze medals in the arts events can now be added to the haul of draughts medals won at the start of the month. Congratulations to Míheál McCaughey who won silver in the u-10 boys and Megan McGee Mícheal & Meganwho took bronze in the U-10 girls in Falcarragh on Saturday. In all, following the Bundoran finals last week the town had five representatives at the county final. The results of the Bundoran competition were as follows (gold medalist named first, then silver and then bronze): U-8 girls – Rachel McGee, Mary Coen, Orla McGrath; u-10 girls Megan McGee, Kayleigh Goodwin, Aine Cullen; U-12 girls – Georgina Jones, Beth Travers, Shauna McCleneghan; u-14 girls Hayley Doherty, Jane Carty, Aoife O’Reilly; U-8 boys – Oisin Walsh, Adam McGlone, Matthew Duffy; u-10 boys – Míheál McCaughey, Oisin Cassidy, Aaron Chapman; u-12 boys – William Hegarty-Brown, Conor Sheerin, Shane Murray; u-14 boys – Adrian Sheerin, Jamie Brennan and Gary Hegarty. The organizers would like to thank John Campbell and all the staff at St Macartan’s National School for facilitating the event.

GAA

The Senior team’s season begins next Sunday, March 23rd when they travel to Moville with the throw-in in the Senior game at 3.00. The following Sunday they have their first home game when they Naomh Columba travel to Gaelic Park – again throw in as at 3.00 for the senior game. Upcoming fixtures for the senior team can be found at  www.BundoranGAA.com

The underage season final got underway for young Bundoran footballers at Gaelic Park over the weekend. The under-16s defeated Four Masters by 3-13 to 1-1. The first half was largely a close-run affair with two late points giving Bundoran a four point cushion – 0-8 to 1-1 going into the half-time break. A Stephen O’Reilly in the early minutes of the second half preceded a blitz of Bundoran points that effectively ended the game as a contest. A report on the game including the team listing and a team picture can be found on the revamped Southern Minor Board site – follow the links on www.donegalgaa.ie

March 12th 2008

The under-16s game against Naomh Naille on Sunday was cancelled due to adverse weather conditions and, as yet, an alternative date has not been set. Thus, they start their league campaign with a home match this Saturday against Four Masters with throw-in in Gaelic Park at 12.00. The u-12s are due to commence within the next two weeks but the fixtures have not yet been set because it is still to be decided whether Bundoran play in Division 1 or 2. The u-10s had their first training of the season last Friday and are out again in Magh Ene College this Friday at 5.00. There was also a good turn-out for the u-8s but with the closure of the College for the Easter break they are not back again until the end of the month.

The first five fixtures for the Senior team were published last week. Moville provide the first opposition on March 23rd and this away tie will be followed by three home fixtures against Naomh Columba (Mar 30), Downings (Apr 5) and Sean MacCumhaills (Apr 12). Training for the Seniors continues each Tuesday and Thursday at 7.00 in Gaelic Park.

March 4th 2008

The competitive 2008 football season gets underway this weekend when Bundoran under-16s start their league campaign with an away tie to Naomh Naille. The match in Mountcharles Sunday has a scheduled 12.00 throw-in but any prospective spectators should check the Southern Minor Board notes elsewhere in this paper to confirm this. Training also begins this week for three other underage teams. The minors have their first session tonight, Thursday, in the gym in Magh Ene College while the u-10s first session of the year is also indoors in Magh Ene at 5.00 on Friday.  Finally, the u-8s get underway with an indoor session in Magh Ene on Monday 10th, also at 5.00.

Bundoran successfully held a GAA Foundation Course last Friday and Saturday. Congratulations to those club members who took this important coaching course and for some we hope it will be a first step to higher qualifications. Those who completed the course from Realt na Mara CLG were: Aine McCaughey, Alicia Herrity, Niall McCaughey, Laurence Goan, Trevor McGlone, Barry Keaney, Michael Flynn, Michael McEniff, Kevin McManus, Jonathan Ward, Ryan Walsh, Ashley Mulhern, Adam Dunmore and Barry McGowan.

February 15th 2008

There will be a Foundation Course held in Bundoran on February 29th and March 1st a course that is essential for all managers and mentors of underage GAA teams. Names of those interested should be given to Bord na nÓg Secretary Tess McCaughey. A Ladies Referee-ing course is being held on April 7th and anyone interested in attending should contact Philomena Granagahan.

Due to the exceptionally poor turn-out at the Registration evening and morning in St Patrick’s Hall another registration evening will be held in Bank House (Choices), Main Street Bundoran on Tuesday Feb 26th from 6-8 pm. It is imperative that all children who wish to play Gaelic football in 2008 are registered. The registration fee is €35 per child and this also covers insurance and transport costs for the year. Currently there are so few children registered that it will be difficult to put forward teams for the County competitions.

U-8 training is due to commence in Magh Ene College Gym on March 10th but as there are currently only two u-8s registered unless there is a significant increase no u-8 football will take place this year. Under-10 training starts in Magh Ene College on Friday March 7th while the u-12s are already started, in conjunction with St Macartan’s NS training. Under-16s have also started and the minors begin on Thursday February 28th at 7.00 in Gaelic Park.

February 4th 2008

The Registration events for all underage footballers – u8s, u-10s, u-12s, u-14s, u-16s and minors, both boys and girls - takes place this weekend after Mass in St Patrick’s Hall. There will be a desk after 7.00 Mass on Saturday evening and after 11.00 Mass on Sunday evening in the porch at St Patrick’s Hall. The registration fee is €35 per child and covers fees to the County Board and all transport costs to matches. Any queries in advance of this should be directed to Registrar Edel Carlin-Rosanio at 086-3636656. Good luck to the County VEC team in the Ulster final on Thursday against Monaghan and to the four panellists from Magh Ene College – Ashley Mulhern, Darren Gilsenan, Jonathan Ward and Michael McEniff.

January 28th 2008

A Bord na nÓg meeting last week set dates for a series of Registration nights for underage footballers. These will be during the third week February. Congratulations to the Magh Ene school side that have now reached the Ulster semi-final – where they will lay tournament favourites St Pauls - following their victory in Clogher last week. Training for the Bundoran under-16s continues to take place alongside the Magh Ene School squad. All last year’s underage managers, that have not already done so, are asked to return any footballs, strips or other gear to Tess McCaughey as soon as possible.

January 14th 2008

The Bord na nOg AGM was held last week in the Holyrood Hotel. At a poorly-attended meeting all official positions and half of the managerial positions were filled. The Senior Board subsequently ratified these appointments and congratulations to the new chairperson Diarmuid Doherty who takes over the reins from John Croghan who is taking a well-earned break from GAA administration after many productive years of service that included Senior club treasurer as well as Bord na nÓg chairperson and of course countless years as a senior referee for the Bundoran club. Elsewhere the officer Board was unchanged with Tess McCaughey remaining  as Secretary, Joan McEniff as Treasurer, John McEniff as PRO and Edel Carlin-Rosanio as Registrar.

John McEniff and Noel Carr remain as u-8 and u-10 managers for the coming year while Bosco Moohan will take over the reins as minor manager from Johnny Keenan. Johnny bows out on a high note - last year’s minor team was the only Bundoran team to win silverware in 2007, having captured the Eddie Doherty Handwoven Tweeds Regional League title. John McEniff will also continue as Og Sport manager but quits his u-16 managerial role, while Michael Flynn and Raymie Dawson both stepped down from management of the u-14s and u-12s respectively. At the weekend Peter McIntyre agreed to take over the management of the u-12s but the club is still seeking u-14 and u-16 managers.
Anyone interested should contact Diarmuid Doherty at 088-8068565 or John McEniff on 087-2386250.

December 10

Community Games

Bundoran Community Games held its AGM last Monday December 10th, in the Holyrood Hotel. Despite notices in the press and notes sent home with every schoolchild there was an abysmal attendance, although apologies had been conveyed by a number of people that had also signaled their willingness to help with specific events. Four of the five key officer positions were filled with Martina Magee taking over as chairperson and Jacinta Brennan, Noel Carr and John McEniff remaining as Treasurer, Children’s Officer and PRO respectively. There were, however, no nominations for the crucial role of Secretary and plans for the forthcoming year are dependant on this role being filled.

In 2007, Bundoran entered seven events and expenditure exceeded income by just under €300. However, having started the year with a healthy bank balance the organisation is still in a relatively good financial position. If all goes well, and a Secretary is found, it is hoped to take advantage of the range of facilities in Bundoran to expand the coverage of the Community Games in 2008. In particular, sports previously covered such as all the Athletic events, basketball and pitch & putt are on the agenda for re-inclusion.

At national level an important change for 2008 is that the number of events has been expanded and in this context the All-Ireland finals in May will cover a lot more than has been the case heretofore, including the transfer of a number of sports from the August leg of the finals. Thus, the dates for the start of the local competitions and for affiliation have been moved back. Therefore, it is important that the officer board be completed within the next few weeks and any volunteers should contact Martina Magee at 9842102 or John McEniff at 0872386250.

Sept 3rd 2007

Bundoran are through to the semi-final of the Intermediate championship after a gritty performance that saw them earn a four point victory over Urris in MacCumhaill Park last Sunday. Both sides would be dis-appointed with their overall display but Bundoran will take heart from their display in the last ten minutes when they reacted with spirit and character to pull away when Urris had seemed to gain the upper hand and were on course to upset the favourites. The Seasiders now play either Milford on Naomh Bríd in the semi-final. Bundoran’s u-14s, bowed out for 2007 last week when they lost out to a late late goal that saw Naomh Conall squeeze past them and on into the Regional Championship final. The minor’s play their long-awaited County league semi-final against Downings this Friday. The match is in Lifford at 6.30 and extra time will be played in the event of a draw.

August 27th 2007

Bundoran’s scheduled championship encounter with Urris was postponed last week and is now likely to be played this weekend instead. League games played over the weekend saw the team drop back to fourth place as Moville beat Cloughaneely and St Nauls extended their lead by beating Muff. However, Bundoran’s chances of securing a vital promotion slot can be sen to have improved as third placed Burt lost to Na Rossa and Moville’s victory leaves Cloughaneely a little further off the pace. The u-21s won a hard-fought championship quarterfinal clash against Downings on Saturday last. A goal in each half was the difference between the sides. The Seasiders led by 1-6 to 0-5 at half-time and eventually ran out 2-9 to 0-9 winners with excellent performances from the two Shanes – McGowan and Moohan – Adam Dunmore and Diarmuid McCaughey.

It was a bad week for the town’s underage footballers with both the minors and under-15s narrowly missing out on titles. Leading by 2-9 to 0-8 in their regional final against Naomh Mhuire, the minors leaked eight points in the last eight minutes, six of them from frees and one from a throw-up for delaying the kick-out - to lose out on a 2-9 to 0-16 score-line. Credit to Naomh Mhuire, however, for taking the opportunities presented to carve out a memorable win. The minors County League semi-final against Downings yesterday evening was postponed and is now expected to be played next Friday, September 7th at a venue yet to be confirmed.

The u-15s took part in the Óg Sport County final blitz in Ballyshannon on Saturday and having beaten Naomh Mhuire 2-5 to 0-6, they went down by 3-4 to 4-3 against Milford. The Bundoran boys dominated possession in both halves but still found themselves 2-2 to 0-1 adrift at half-time and despite a brave second half conceded two soft goals to a very efficient and economical Milford side. The u-14s are out this evening, Thursday August 30th, in their Brian McEniff Hotels championship semi-final when they take on Naomh Conall at 6.45 at a venue which is yet to be confirmed.

August 6th 2007

Blessed by good weather, the GAA/VHI Cúl Camp ran very successfully in Gaelic Park last week. John McEniff has j-pegs of the participants with the National League trophy and if anyone wants them e-mailed they should contact him at John@McEniff.com Well done to the u-15s Og Sport team who came top of their section in the Regional tournament in Dunkineely last Saturday. The team play in the County final in Ballyshannon on August 18th. Good luck to Bundoran’s three representatives in the Donegal u-16 squad for the Buncrana Cup final against Cavan this Saturday and good luck also to the five u-15s – Nathan, Steven, Brandon, Darren and Neal travelling with the County squad for the Ulster blitz in Cookstown.

July 24th 2007

The GAA/VHI Cúl Camp in Gaelic Park begins this Monday July 30th and runs from 10.00 to 3.00 until Friday. There are still places available and kids can be booked into the camp at Gaelic Park at Gaelic Park Bundoran on Monday July 30th. However, if you wish to book in on the day advance notice to John McEniff at 0872386250 would be appreciated. Those attending the camp need to bring suitable changing gear and a packed lunch. The cost is €60 for one child and €40 for siblings thereafter. On the final day of the camp all kids will receive a full set of playing gear, jersey, shorts and socks and a nifty knapsack.

Bundoran senior and reserve teams rested this week but saw their fading hopes for promotion boosted by defeats for rivals St Nauls and Cloughaneely. The u-16s lost out in the regional championship to Naomh Conall by 2-15 to 1-11 although the match was a lot close than this score-line suggests. Bundoran missed a golden goal chance to put five between the sides going into the last quarter and paid the price when Glenties side hit two goals inside a minute directly afterwards and went on to dominate the last ten minutes. With their panel depleted by both injuries and holidays, the team can take some heart from the fact that they could still have won this game and look at winning the County championship as an achievable goal. Eight of the u-16 squad were out the following day with the u-15 Óg Sport team and showed great spirit to recover sufficiently to win all three of their bltz games against Aodh Ruadh, Naomh Bríd and Four Masters to qualify for the Regional Final blitz. This blitz is currently scheduled for next Saturday July 28th in Dunkineely but is likely to be moved to August 4th because of Donegal’s qualifier tie in Omagh. The u-16 championship semi-final will see Bundoran meet Northern Champions St Eunans who convincingly beat Cloughaneely in the Northern final. This match will be played after the Buncrana Cup final on the week beginning Aug 12th.

The minors also have realistic hopes of a County title but there is still been no indication when their county semi-final will be played or who the opposition will be as the Northern League final has yet to be played. Following a postponement last week, the minors expected to be out twice this week but Naomh Ultan decided not to field late on Monday evening and ceded the first leg to Bundoran. The Seasiders hope to travel to the away leg against Naomh Ultan in Dunkineely on Thursday.

On Saturday next, July 28th, Bundoran’s U-10 A + B squads will travel to their final Blitz of the year. The bus for the Ardara Blitz will leave the school @ 9 30am. Also please note that Training on Wed 25th @ 3pm will be the final under-10 and under-8 training session of the summer although there might be some challenge matches with visiting teams in the months ahead.

July 17th 2007

Bundoran seniors progressed to the next round of the Intermediate championship on Sunday last when they defeated Burt by 3-6 to 0-5 in their second leg tie having already won the first leg in Burt the previous week. The Reserves, however, were on the wrong end of a 2-9 to 2-7 result and having already lost the away tie bid farewell to any championship aspirations for 2007. The u-21s had a very comfortable win against Fanad Gaels on the previous Tuesday evening. Bundoran’s Liam Travers had the ball in the net after six seconds and when Richie Morris caressed the ball in for the home team’s second goal after five minutes it was already 2-4 to 0-1 and game over before Bundoran ran up 4-18 to Fanad Gael’s 0-9. The other goal-scorers were Ashley Mulhern and Shane McGowan.

The Bundoran u-14s failed to beat Noamh Conall last Wednesday evening and miss out on a Brian McEniff Hotels final appearance as a result. With a bye to the championship semi-finals the u-14s now have a long break until August 27th before their next game. However, a number of the under-14 panel are out this Saturday when the u-15 Og Sport competition begins with a blitz in Donegal town where the competing teams will be Naomh Bríd, Four Masters, Aodh Ruadh, Naomh Naille and Bundoran.

Following a fairly wet few days the clouds cleared on Saturday morning allowing Bundoran to host an enjoyable u-10 blitz with the visiting clubs all being neighbours - Aodh Ruadh, Naomh Bríd and Melvin Gaels. Both the A and B competitions were closely contested affairs with Aodh Ruadh emerging victorious in the A section and Bundoran winning the B competition. The minors take on Naomh Ultan in Gaelic Park in their first round first leg Eddie Doherty Handwoven Tweeds Championship game this Wednesday evening with the return leg in Dunkineely on Wednesday July 25th. There is no indication yet when the minors are due out in their County league semi-final.

On Monday evening the under-16s won a very close and highly competitive DAC championship semi-final against Ardara in Ardara. Behind by two points at the break 1-3 to 0-4, Bundoran put in a storming second half performance and but conceded soft goals at key periods that kept a spirited Ardara in the tie until the closing minutes. The final will be played on Friday 20th July in Tirconall Park, Donegal town at 6.15 and the opposition will be Naomh Conall.

July 2nd 2007

Bundoran Minors won their first regional title in a long time, and the first ever for this particular group of players, when they beat Naomh Mhuire by 2-15 to 2-12 last Monday evening in the Eddie Doherty Handwoven Tweeds Regional League final. Last year this fixture had to be abandoned when rivalry gave way to hostility but this game was played in a much better spirit and in the end Bundoran’s greater hunger and their more accurate forwards proved key to victory. Congratulations to the team and managers Johnny Keenan and Paul McGee. In a pulsating game, Bundoran led in the early stages, then surrendered the advantage before retrieving a four point deficit to go into the break level. Bundoran flew out of the blocks in the second half and led by six points entering the last ten minutes but a goal and follow-up point for Naomh Mhuire re-ignited the game but Bundoran tucked away three further points to Naomh Mhuire’s two to edge victory. The date for their County semi-final has yet to be set.

A thrilling double header in Gaelic Park last Wednesday evening saw both the u-16s and u-14s record narrow victories with late scores. Playing with a strong breeze, the u-14s trailed league leaders Ardara by 1-1 to 0-3 at the break and feel further behind on the re-start. An Adam Coyne goal got them back into contention but Ardara pulled away again but in the final minutes a Lee Creevy goal and Johnny Boyle point swung the game in favour of the Seasiders who won by 2-5 to 1-7.  The 14s played at home to Dungloe last night, Wednesday, and their final game in the Brian McEniff Hotels League is away to Naomh Conall the following Wednesday July 11th. Victory in both these games will almost certainly see them through to the Regional final.

The 16s comeback in their Donegal Adventure Centre Championship match with Four Masters was even more dramatic. Playing into the breeze in the first half they were comfortably contained the Masters but conceded 1-1 in the dying minutes of the half to enter the break two behind on a 1-5 to 0-6 scoreline. Bundoran opened the second half well but then lost their way and a blitz of scores (2-2) from Four Masters between the 40th and 45th minutes saw the home side go nine points adrift. They looked beat on a 3-8 to 0-9 scoreline with less then ten minutes remaining but with Peter McGonigle, Ashley Mulhern, Michael McEniff and Stephen Reilly leading the way they engineered what was a heart-breaking comeback for a spirited Four Masters to run out 1-15 to 3-8 winners. The Bundoran u-16s next outing will be a championship semi-final on Friday July 13th.

Despite the inclement weather the Bundoran U-10s had an enjoyable days football at the Naomh Brid Blitz on Sat last. In the A section they had victories over Kilcar ,Aodh Ruadh and hosts Naomh Brid and lost out by a single point to Four Masters whilst the B side battled bravely before going down to Four Masters and Aodh Ruadh. Our next blitz is at home on July 14th .Training continues for all U-8 / U 10 boys and girls in the park on Wed @ 3 o clock. There is no blitz this Saturday while Bundoran are again hosting a blitz on Saturday July 14th.

Bundoran Bord na nOg

Summer is coming and so is the annual GAA Cúl Camp in the first week of August. This year the summer camp n Gaelic Park runs from July 31 to aug 3rd and kids aged 7 to 13 will be encouraged to learn and develop sporting- and life-skills by participating in Gaelic Games. Details and entry forms are available from Teresa in St Macartan’s National School or from John McEniff.

The u-10s have a blitz in Killybegs this Saturday. The bus leaves St Macaratan’s National School at 9.30 on Saturday morning. The Community Games u-10 team put in a great performance last Saturday in Dunfanaghy, winning bronze medals following a 7-4 to 4-0 victory over Milford in the playoff having lost their semi-final to a very impressive Doagh team that went on to win the final comfortably. In the town league, West and North will contest the final on June 16th after last Wednesday night’s final league games. The u-12s lost narrowly to current table-toppers Aodh Ruadh in the Aerfort Dun na nGall league last Monday evening, while the u-14s started their campaign on Wednesday May 30th.  Next Monday, the u-12s travel to Ardara, while on Wednesday June 6th the u-14s take on Naomh Naille in Mountcharles.

The u-10 A and B teams put in sterling performances in the Michael Shannon tournament in Ballyshannon last Saturday with both teams getting to the final. Unfortunately both came off second best but the A team in particular were desperately unlucky to lose 4-2 to 3-2 in a tightly contested game. The under-16s secured maximum points in the U-16 league when they won by 4-14 to 3-11 in Dungloe last Friday evening. The home side came back very strongly in the second half, having trailed by 18 points at the break. The Regional Final will be played in Mountcharles on Friday May 11th at 7.00 and Bundoran’s opponents will be Naomh Conall who won all their matches except one, away to Bundoran. The Glenties boys provided a stern challenge that day and will look to go one better than the Feile final two years ago when it took a last minute Jonny Ward point to bring the final to extra time and an eventual Bundoran victory.

The Minors play their last league tie this Wednesday, May 9th and victory against Naomh Mhuire will ensure them a Division 2 regional final berth. The regional final is currently scheduled for Wednesday, May 16th at a venue yet to be confirmed. Last week the minors had a very comfortable win, scoring a total to 5-23, against an under-strength Na Rossa in Leitearmacaward.
